Minecraft VPNs: when one helps

For Minecraft a tunnel is a door opener and a privacy screen. It is not a speed boost.

What players actually want

People ask about Minecraft VPNs for four reasons, and they deserve four different answers. Getting on at school or on dorm Wi-Fi: yes, that works. Hiding your home IP address from a server owner or a friend of a friend: yes, and it is a sensible thing to do. Lower ping: almost never. Getting around a ban: we will not help, and servers are good at catching it.

Where it helps

  • Launcher sign in and multiplayer on networks that filter games.
  • Small community servers and self hosted worlds, where the host can see every player's IP address.
  • A poor route between your provider and one hosting region, which a detour can sometimes fix.
  • Joining friends while you travel, from a network that blocks game ports.

Where it hurts or does nothing

  • Big public servers block many VPN address ranges to stop ban evaders and bots. You may be refused or asked to verify.
  • Ping goes up by the length of the detour. A nearby city adds a little and a far one adds a lot.
  • Server side lag and low frame rates have nothing to do with your connection path.
  • A ban follows the account as well as the address.

Java and Bedrock are not the same in a tunnel

Java Edition talks over TCP, which any mode of the client will carry. Bedrock uses UDP, and UDP only goes through when the client runs as a full tunnel, in TUN mode on a PC or as a normal VPN on a phone. If Bedrock multiplayer fails while the browser works, check that mode first. On a phone there is nothing to set, because the mobile clients always run as a full tunnel. LAN worlds are a separate case. Two players on the same home Wi-Fi find each other over the local network, and the tunnel is not involved, so there is no reason to switch it on for that.

Getting on from a filtered network

1

Take the five day key from @valideo_bot in Telegram.

2

On a PC, install Hiddify or v2rayN, import the key and switch on TUN mode.

3

Choose the city nearest to the game server, if you know where it is hosted. If you do not, choose the one nearest to you.

4

Start the launcher, sign in with your Microsoft account and join.

5

If a server rejects the connection, try one other city. If it still says no, that server does not accept VPNs.

Playing fair

  • Using a VPN is not against Mojang's rules. Individual servers make their own.
  • Do not use it to return to a server that banned you.
  • On a school network, the policy you signed still applies.
  • Tell younger players not to share the key. It covers five devices, not five friends' households.
  • Consoles need a router that holds the key.
Q.Do Minecraft VPNs lower ping?

A.Rarely. Only when your direct route is unusually poor.

Q.Why does a big server kick me with the VPN on?

A.It blocks known VPN ranges to prevent ban evasion. Try another city, or play there without the tunnel.

Q.Does it work for Bedrock?

A.Yes, when the client runs as a full tunnel so that UDP is carried.

Q.Can the server owner still see my IP?

A.They see the VPN server's address and not your home one.

Q.Is this allowed at school?

A.A VPN is legal. Whether the school permits one is a separate matter.

Q.Will my Realms subscription be affected?

A.No. It belongs to your Microsoft account and does not depend on your address.
