Free VPNs: choose by how long you need one

An hour in an airport and a year of evenings are different problems. Free solves the first and only pretends to solve the second.

Start with the clock

Before you compare free VPNs, ask how long you need one. For an hour on public Wi-Fi almost any reputable free tier will do. For a week abroad you will hit a data cap by day three. For every evening at home, no free service is built to carry you, and the ones that say they are tend to earn from you in ways they do not advertise.

So are VPNs free? For short jobs, yes. For daily use, VPNs for free stop being free the moment you count what you give up.

If you need it for an hour

  • A capped free tier from a company with a name, an address and a paid plan.
  • Expect one or two locations and modest speed.
  • No card should be requested. If one is, that is a trial and not a free tier.
  • Delete the app afterwards if you do not plan to use it again.

If you need it for a week

  • Monthly allowances on free tiers are small. One evening of video can finish one.
  • Card-first trials work, if you set a reminder to cancel.
  • Our five free days fit this case exactly: no cap, no card, all six locations.
  • A week is also long enough to find out whether you want one at all.

If you need it every day

This is where lists of top VPNs and best VPNs come in, and where they mislead. They rank paid brands by commission and add a free section at the bottom. Someone typing best VPN network free or what are the best VPNs wants a permanent free service that behaves like a paid one. It does not exist. Servers and bandwidth cost money every month, so a service that is VPNs free forever and unlimited is charging you in data, in adverts or in your own bandwidth being resold.

For daily use, pay someone a few dollars, and choose them with a test and not from a chart. It does not have to be us. It does have to be a company that tells you what it keeps, lets you leave without a fight and does not need your card before you have seen the service work.

Red flags on any free VPN

  • No company name or address anywhere on the site.
  • Permissions beyond the VPN connection: contacts, SMS, location.
  • A privacy policy that says we value your privacy and little else.
  • No paid plan. Then you are the income.
  • An installer from a download portal and not from the official store.

Q.Are VPNs free to use safely?

A.Some are: capped tiers from established companies. The unsafe ones hide how they earn.

Q.What are the best VPNs with no price?

A.The ones that print their limit on the first screen. A visible cap is an honest price.

Q.Why is my free VPN so slow at night?

A.Free users share a few crowded servers and paying users go first. That is the business model working.

Q.Does Valideo have a free plan?

A.No. It has five free days of the full service, and then the key stops.

Q.Will I be charged after the five days?

A.No. We never take a card, so there is nothing to charge.

Q.Can I use the free days on my laptop and phone together?

A.Yes. The trial key covers five devices at once, like a paid one.
