How do you unblock a website: six steps

Start at the top. Stop at the first step that works for you.

How to read this page

The methods below run from least effort to most power. Each one states what it beats and what it does not, so you can stop as soon as one works. If you arrived asking how to unblock a website at school or at work, remember that the network has an owner and the owner has rules. Everything here is legal. Not all of it will be welcome on every network.

Six methods, in order

1

Try the https:// version of the address, or another official domain of the same site. It beats old filters that match exact URLs. Two seconds.

2

Switch networks: mobile data in place of Wi-Fi. It beats any local filter, because you have left the network. It costs data.

3

Change your DNS server to a public resolver in the network settings. It beats DNS only blocks. Two minutes.

4

Use a web proxy page for a single article. It beats simple filters, breaks logins and video, and is not private.

5

Use Tor Browser. It beats most filters and hides the destination. It is slow, and many sites reject it.

6

Use a VPN key. It beats local filters, provider blocks and region locks, and keeps sites working normally.

How to unblock website access on a phone

On a phone, methods two and six are the realistic ones. Switching to mobile data takes one swipe. For anything lasting, install a free client, which means v2rayNG or Hiddify on Android and Streisand or V2Box on iPhone, and import a key. From then on every app goes through the tunnel, which matters because on a phone the blocked thing is usually an app and not a web page.

On a computer

A computer offers more choices and more ways to get it wrong. DNS changes are made per network adapter. Proxy pages and extensions affect one browser only. A desktop client such as Hiddify or v2rayN covers the browser in proxy mode and the whole machine in TUN mode. On a managed work or school computer you may not be allowed to install anything, and the right move then is to use your own device.

What each method does not do

  • HTTPS and DNS tricks do nothing against modern category filters.
  • Web proxies do nothing for apps, accounts or video.
  • Tor does not make blocked streaming work and is too slow for calls.
  • A VPN does not get around a site that bans all server addresses. That is rare, but it happens.
  • None of them changes the rules of the network you are on.

The last method, in detail

1

Open @valideo_bot in Telegram. Tap Start and ask for the free days.

2

Copy the vless:// line or keep the QR code visible.

3

Import it into your client and press connect.

4

Choose the nearest city for a filter, or a city in the right country for a region lock.

5

Open the site. Five days are free, which is long enough to learn whether it solves your problem.

Q.How do you unblock a website without installing anything?

A.Try the HTTPS address, another network, a DNS change or a web proxy. Each has narrow limits.

Q.How to unblock a website permanently?

A.Use a tunnel. It does not depend on lists of mirrors or proxies, which go stale.

Q.Is Tor better than a VPN for this?

A.It is more anonymous and much slower. For everyday blocked sites a VPN is more practical.

Q.Do these steps work on a Chromebook?

A.On a personal one, yes, with an Android client. A managed one blocks them by policy.

Q.Will I get in trouble?

A.A VPN is legal. Breaking a school's or an employer's network policy can have consequences there.

Q.Which step works most often?

A.The last one. It is the only method that does not rely on the filter being old or simple.
