VPN and China: what to pack before you fly

Inside the firewall you cannot download the tools that get you out. Everything has to be on the phone when you board.

What you are dealing with

Mainland China filters the internet at its border. Google, Gmail, Maps, WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook, YouTube, X, Telegram and a long list of news sites do not load. The same system looks for VPN traffic and cuts it. OpenVPN and WireGuard are recognised within seconds. The protocols that last are the ones that look like ordinary secure web browsing. VLESS over Reality, which our keys use, was developed by people living behind that firewall.

Even so, nobody can promise a connection on a given day in a given city. That is the first honest thing to say about VPN and China.

The packing list

  • Client app installed on every device. App stores in China do not list VPN clients.
  • The key imported and tested. Our bot lives on Telegram, which is blocked there.
  • The key saved offline: a screenshot of the QR code and the text in a notes app.
  • A second client installed as a fallback, with the same key in it.
  • Offline maps, tickets, hotel addresses in Chinese, and a translation app that works offline.
  • Roaming enabled on your home SIM as plan B.

Why VPNs in China fail

Blocking a list of addresses would be easy to dodge, so the filter goes further. It watches how a connection begins, matches the opening against the fingerprints of popular VPN protocols, and then knocks on the suspect server itself to hear how it replies. Anything that replies in VPN fashion is gone by the afternoon. Commercial brands respond by cycling through addresses, which explains why every roundup of the best VPNs for China has a different winner each season. Reality takes another route: when the filter knocks, the server responds exactly as a famous public website would. There is nothing odd to report. Call it an edge, never a certainty.

After landing

1

Connect to mobile data or Wi-Fi first and let the phone settle.

2

Open the client and try Singapore. It is the closest of our cities.

3

Give it a full minute. If it fails, try Seattle, then Amsterdam.

4

Hotel Wi-Fi is often the strictest network you will meet. Compare it with mobile data.

5

Around major political dates everything gets worse. Plan for offline days.

The legal grey area, stated plainly

China requires VPN services to be licensed by the state, and unlicensed ones may not operate. Enforcement has been aimed at people who sell or run them inside the country. Foreign visitors using one on their own phone have not been the target. That is an observation about practice and not a legal right. Be discreet, keep politics out of it, and if you are travelling for work, follow your employer's instructions. This is not legal advice.

Things that surprise first time visitors

  • Roaming data on a foreign SIM is often unfiltered, because it is routed back through your home carrier. It can also be expensive.
  • Hong Kong and Macau are outside the firewall.
  • Apple's App Store for China has no VPN clients. Your home Apple ID still shows them, until you need to download one over a filtered connection.
  • Video calls work on good days only.
  • From inside, support is hard to reach. Sort out questions before you fly.
Q.Does a VPN work in China?

A.Some do, on most days. None work every day. Protocols that look like ordinary HTTPS have the best record.

Q.Can I get a key after arriving?

A.Only with difficulty, since Telegram is blocked. Get it and save it before you travel.

Q.Which city should I connect to?

A.Singapore first, then Seattle.

Q.Is it illegal for tourists?

A.Unlicensed services may not operate there. Enforcement has focused on sellers and not on visitors. It remains a grey area.

Q.How long a term do I need?

A.The free days cover a short trip. For anything longer, start a paid term before you leave.

Q.What are the best VPNs for China, honestly?

A.Whichever still looks like normal web traffic this month. Test yours before departure and carry a fallback.
