Secure VPNs: a ten minute audit

You do not need a laboratory. You need a leak test page, a privacy policy and ten minutes.

What secure means here

Every serious VPN uses encryption that nobody is going to break. What separates secure VPNs from the rest is everything around the cipher: whether the client leaks, whether the software can be inspected, what the operator records, and whether the tunnel holds on a hostile network. All four can be checked from your own chair, and the phrases on a marketing page add nothing to any of them.

The ten minute audit

1

Minute 1 to 2: connect, then run an IP lookup. The address and the provider must belong to the VPN.

2

Minute 3 to 4: run an extended DNS leak test. Your own provider must not appear.

3

Minute 5: run a WebRTC leak test in your browser.

4

Minute 6: cut the connection on purpose. Do your apps keep sending traffic in the clear, or do they stop?

5

Minute 7 to 9: read the privacy policy for the words logs, timestamps, IP address and share.

6

Minute 10: find out who owns the company and where it is registered.

What good looks like

  • A modern protocol: VLESS with TLS and Reality, WireGuard, or OpenVPN with current settings.
  • No leaks in any of the three tests.
  • A client that is open source or has a recent audit from a named firm.
  • A logging statement that lists what is kept, and not only what is not.
  • An owner you can identify.

Secure web browsing: what a VPN adds to HTTPS

HTTPS already encrypts what you send to a website, passwords and card numbers included. For secure web browsing VPN protection covers what HTTPS leaves visible: the names of the sites you visit, and your address as those sites see it. On open Wi-Fi that is the difference between the hotspot owner knowing your whole evening and knowing nothing. A VPN will not warn you about a phishing page. That is the browser's job, and yours.

Phrases that are only decoration

  • Encryption described as fit for banks or armies. It is the same standard ciphers that everyone uses.
  • Server counts in the thousands. That is capacity and not security.
  • Anonymous. No VPN makes a logged in user anonymous.
  • Award badges from review sites that earn commission.
  • Zero knowledge, with no audit behind it.

Valideo against its own audit

  • Protocol: VLESS over Reality, TLS 1.3, TCP 443.
  • Software: third party open source clients, so none of our code runs on your device.
  • Logging: no accounts and no connection logs.
  • Drop behaviour: use always-on with block connections on Android, or TUN mode on a desktop.
  • Gap: no third party audit yet. We say so plainly.

Run the audit on us

The five free days need no card, which makes them a convenient test bench. Ask @valideo_bot for a key and go through the ten minutes above. If anything fails, tell the bot. We would prefer to hear it from you than to read it in a forum. The same ten minutes work on any other provider's trial or refund period, so if you are choosing between two services, run the audit on both in the same evening and compare notes.

Q.What separates secure VPNs from the rest?

A.Four things you can test: no leaks, inspectable software, an operator with nothing logged, and a tunnel that survives a network trying to block it.

Q.Does a VPN make web browsing secure by itself?

A.It locks down the road, not the destination. A current browser and a cautious finger on links are still your job.

Q.Is a kill switch necessary?

A.Wherever you would not want a single unprotected packet, yes. Android has it as a system option next to always-on. On a computer, full tunnel mode does the same work.

Q.Could the VPN operator read my passwords?

A.No. They travel inside HTTPS, which is sealed between your browser and the site.

Q.Is VLESS secure?

A.The security comes from TLS 1.3 and Reality, which rely on standard modern cryptography.

Q.Has Valideo been audited?

A.Not yet, and we say so.
