How much are VPNs? What drives the price

One service, three prices. Which one you pay depends on how long you commit.

The quick answer

How much do VPNs cost? For consumer services in the US, a month at a time usually runs from about five to thirteen dollars. Commit to a year and the monthly figure drops to somewhere between three and seven. Commit to two years or more and the adverts show two to four dollars a month. The service is the same in all three cases. The difference is how much you prepay, and what it renews at afterwards.

So when someone asks how much are VPNs, the accurate reply is another question: for how long?

What you are paying for

  • Servers and bandwidth, the real recurring cost.
  • Apps for every platform, if the provider makes its own.
  • Support staff.
  • Audits and legal work, at the better companies.
  • Marketing and affiliate commissions, which are a large share at the big brands.

Why the same service has three prices

Monthly plans have the highest margin because monthly customers leave easily. Long plans trade a lower margin for commitment and cash in advance. The cheapest headline price is nearly always an introductory rate. Look for the renewal figure before you judge a deal. A plan that costs three dollars a month for two years and then renews at ten is, over four years, a plan that costs six and a half.

What free costs

Free tiers are paid for by their limits, which push you towards a paid plan, or by adverts, or by data. For light and occasional use, a capped tier from a known company is a fair deal. For daily use you pay either in money or in something you did not agree to. A short, uncapped trial of a paid service is different again. It is a marketing cost that the provider chooses to carry.

Paying less without regret

  • Work out the price over the period you will really use, including one renewal.
  • Turn auto-renewal off straight away, if it exists.
  • Try the service first on your own networks.
  • Do not pay for bundled extras you will never open.
  • Longer is cheaper only if you stay.

When it ends, nothing is charged. You decide again from the beginning.

Is the most expensive the best?

Not as a rule. Beyond a certain point you are paying for a brand name, a bundle and a marketing budget. What is worth money is a clean logging record, a protocol that works where you need it and honest terms. Some cheaper services have all three, and some expensive ones lack one.

Q.How much are VPNs per month on average?

A.About five to thirteen dollars paid monthly, and two to seven per month on plans of a year or longer.

Q.Why do prices jump at renewal?

A.The first term is an introductory rate. The standard rate applies afterwards unless you cancel.

Q.Is a lifetime VPN deal worth it?

A.Be careful. Servers cost money every month, and a one time payment does not cover them forever.

Q.How much do VPNs cost at Valideo?

A.See the home page or the bot for the current figures. Four terms, and no renewal charges.

Q.Can I pay monthly?

A.Yes. One month is one of the four terms.

Q.Is there a student discount?

A.No special schemes. The long terms are where the saving is.
