How to find my IP address (and change it)

Two addresses, two jobs. One is for your home network, the other is what the internet sees.

Which address do you need?

You have a private address inside your home network and a public one on the internet. When a website, a game host or a support agent asks for my IP address, they mean the public one. To find my IP in that sense, search what IP address in a search engine and read the number at the top. The private one lives in your device settings and usually begins with 192.168 or 10.

So how do i find IP address details depends on the question. Trouble with a printer or a console at home: private. Anything to do with a website or an online service: public.

How to find your IP address, by device

1

Windows: Settings, Network and internet, your connection, Properties. Or open a terminal and type ipconfig.

2

Mac: System Settings, Network, your connection, Details.

3

iPhone or iPad: Settings, Wi-Fi, tap the round information icon next to your network.

4

Android: Settings, Network and internet, Internet, tap your Wi-Fi network.

5

Any device, public address: search what IP address, or open a lookup page.

How to check my IP address when something is wrong

Support teams ask how do you check IP address settings because most home network faults show up there. An address that begins with 169.254 means the device never got one from the router. Two devices with the same private address will knock each other offline. If you want to know how to check IP address conflicts, look at the router's list of connected devices.

For the public side, an IP address check on a lookup page tells you whether your provider has moved you to a new address, which sometimes explains why a service suddenly asks you to log in again.

How to change your IP address

  • Restart the router. On most home lines the provider hands out a new public address.
  • Switch networks. Mobile data and home Wi-Fi use different addresses.
  • Ask the provider. Some will change it on request, and a static address is a paid extra.
  • Use a VPN. Sites see the server's address and you choose the city.
  • Private addresses can be changed in the router's settings, which matters only inside your home.

How to check my IP after connecting a key

This is the simplest proof that a VPN works. Note your public address and the provider's name. Connect with a Valideo key and pick a location. Look again. A new number next to the name of a hosting company means the tunnel is carrying you. Your usual provider's name still on the page means one of two things: the client never connected, or it is in a mode your browser ignores.

Small print

  • People who ask how can you find IP address details for someone else: you cannot, beyond what that person's traffic shows to a site you run.
  • Sharing your public address in a chat is unwise. It invites nuisance and gives nothing useful.
  • A lookup needs no software. If a page asks you to install something to see your address, leave.
  • My IP address find tools all read the same number. Pick any reputable one.
  • The key needs no account, so your address is never tied to a name on our side.
Q.How do I find my IP address fastest?

A.Search what IP address. The public one is shown at the top of the results.

Q.How to find my IP address on a phone without Wi-Fi?

A.Use a lookup page in the browser. It shows the carrier's public address for your mobile connection.

Q.How do I find IP address details for my router?

A.Open the router's admin page. The status screen shows the public address from your provider.

Q.Is my IP the same on every device at home?

A.The public one is. Each device has its own private address behind the router.

Q.Can I pick a specific new IP?

A.Not a specific number. With a VPN you choose the city, and the server assigns an address from its pool.

Q.Does a new IP sign me out of websites?

A.Sometimes. Some services ask you to log in again when the address changes. That is a security feature.
