Location by IP address: how close it gets

The pin on the map is a guess based on paperwork. Here is where the guess comes from.

Short version

Finding a location with IP address data works at the level of countries and regions, not streets. An IP location is an entry in a commercial database that says where a block of addresses was registered or where devices using it have been seen. Country: almost always right. State: usually. City: a coin toss in some areas. Street: never.

So if you wondered where is my IP location and the map showed a town forty miles away, the tool is working as designed.

Where the databases get their data

  • The regional internet registries keep a public record: this range of numbers belongs to that company, registered in that country.
  • Database vendors then work out, from provider hints and traffic patterns, which area each range is used in.
  • Phone apps with GPS permission feed pairs of address and position into the larger databases.
  • Each vendor updates on its own schedule, which is why an IP address location lookup on two sites can disagree.
  • Mobile carriers funnel whole regions through a few gateways, so a phone can appear in another state.

What a site learns from my IP address and location

A service that reads my IP address with location data learns your provider, your rough area and your connection type. It uses them to choose a language, show local prices, apply licensing rules and notice odd logins. It does not get your name, your house or your phone number. Those are not in the address.

Pages that print what is my IP address location in red capitals are selling something. They show the same line every website has always been able to see.

Why people ask where location IP address data comes from

Usually because something went wrong. A streaming service thinks you are abroad. A shop shows the wrong currency. A bank flags a login. The cause is nearly always a provider that recently moved a block of addresses to a new region. Databases catch up within weeks. Asking the service to correct it rarely helps, because the service only reads what the database tells it.

Searches like what is my IP location, my IP location, whats my IP location and what is my IP address lookup all lead to the same estimate, whatever the wording.

Moving the pin

1

Look up your current result: my IP address and location, as any lookup page shows it.

3

Paste the key into a free client and choose a city, for example Seattle.

4

Look again. The pin should sit in or near that city, and the provider should be a hosting company.

What the pin cannot do

  • It does not change GPS. A phone app with location permission still knows where you are.
  • It does not change the region of an account you opened years ago.
  • Some services compare the address with other signals and notice the mismatch.
  • A brand new server may sit in the wrong city in some databases for a while.
  • Whats my IP and location tools, and whats my IP address and location tools, will differ by a few miles from each other. That is normal.
Q.Can location by IP address find my house?

A.No. The data stops at a rough area. Anything more precise comes from GPS or from an account, not from the address.

Q.Why is my IP location wrong?

A.The database records where your provider registered the block, often a regional hub. Mobile networks are the least accurate.

Q.Can I fix a wrong location?

A.Not directly. Providers and database vendors update it over time. Some services let you set your region in the account settings.

Q.What does whats my IP location address show when a VPN is on?

A.The server's city and the hosting company that owns the server's address.

Q.Do streaming services use only the IP?

A.Mostly, plus lists of known data centre ranges. A few also check payment country or GPS in their mobile apps.

Q.Is IP lookup legal?

A.Yes. The address is public by design, and looking it up reveals nothing private.
