Why we will not name a winner
Pages about the best free VPNs are written to rank in search and to earn commission from paid plans. We sell a product too, so a list from us would be no better. What helps more is a way to judge any free service in a few minutes. If you came here asking what are the best free VPNs, the answer is the ones that pass the scorecard below, and for light use that is a short but real list of capped tiers from established companies.
The scorecard: one point for each
- The company has a public name, an address and a history longer than a year.
- The free limit is stated up front in gigabytes, locations or devices.
- There is a paid plan, so the free tier is a sample and not the whole business.
- The app asks for the VPN permission and nothing else.
- The privacy policy says what is kept and for how long.
- No card is requested at any point in the free flow.
- The app is in the official store and was updated in recent months.
Reading the Reddit threads
Threads about Reddit VPNs are worth your time because nobody there earns per click. Search best VPNs Reddit or free VPNs Reddit and you will find the things review sites leave out: a cap that was cut, new adverts, a quiet change of owner. The best free VPNs Reddit users recommend are usually the same two or three capped tiers, and their reasons are concrete.
Read them with two cautions. Some accounts are marketing. And advice ages quickly, so check the date. A specific report from last month beats a popular comment from three years ago.
Free VPNs for Firestick
- Very few free services have a Fire TV app. Free VPNs for Firestick mostly mean sideloading an Android build.
- Video eats data. A month's free allowance can be gone in a single film night.
- Guides to the best VPNs for Firestick, or the best Firestick VPNs, list paid products for that reason.
- In practice the best free VPNs for Firestick are trials: a few unlimited days of a paid service.
- With our key, install v2rayNG on the stick, or put the key on a router.
Gaming VPNs on a free tier
The pitch for gaming VPNs is always the same: less lag. Physics disagrees. Your packets now visit one more machine, and on a free server that machine is shared with a crowd, so delay climbs and jumps around after dinner. You will not read that in rankings of the best VPNs for gaming. The genuine benefits are different ones: a dorm network that refuses the game, or a lobby where you would prefer strangers not to learn your home address. For those, borrow a trial, play on your usual network for a couple of evenings and see.
Good free VPNs exist for light browsing. For games and video, think in terms of trials.
A five day test in place of a list

Decide on day five with your own evidence.
Q.What are the best free VPNs for daily streaming?
A.None. Free tiers are sized for light browsing. For video, use trials or pay a few dollars a month.
Q.Are Reddit recommendations reliable?
A.More than affiliate sites, less than your own test. Look for recent, specific reports.
Q.Do gaming VPNs lower ping?
A.Only when your own route to the server is bad. Otherwise expect a little more delay.
Q.Can I put a free VPN on a Firestick?
A.Sometimes, by sideloading. The data cap is the real obstacle.
Q.Is the Valideo trial limited for games or video?
A.No cap and no throttle. We do not support piracy or gambling on any plan.
Q.How many points should a free VPN score?
A.All seven, ideally. Missing the company name or the permissions check is a reason to walk away.
