What the words mean
Virtual private network is the full name and VPN is the short one. The term comes from offices: a company links remote staff to its internal network over the public internet, and encryption makes that link private. The consumer version turns the idea around. You connect to a provider's server instead of an office, and the point is to keep the local network out of your traffic and to choose where you appear to be.
A free virtual private network is that same service at no charge, and the no charge part is where the differences begin.
What you usually give up with a virtual private network for free
- Volume: a monthly data allowance, often used up in days.
- Choice: a couple of locations out of the many shown on the website.
- Speed: you queue behind paying customers on busy servers.
- Reach: free tiers rarely include a protocol that passes filtered networks.
- Privacy, sometimes: advertising code inside the app, or vague rules on what is collected.
About those best lists
Search virtual private network best and the first page is comparison sites. Each claims to have found the best virtual private network service, and each earns a commission from the brand at the top. They are useful for facts that you can check elsewhere: where a company is registered, what the plan costs on renewal, how long the refund window is. They are not useful for the ranking itself, or for the free options tacked on at the end.
The only place a service proves itself is your own connection, because the route from your provider to their server is unique to you.
A browser is not the whole device
A virtual private network browser, meaning a browser with a VPN switch built in, covers only what happens in that browser. Your mail app, your messengers and your games keep using the open connection. Some of these switches are ordinary proxies with a nicer label. If your goal is to open one blocked page, that is fine. If you expect your whole phone or laptop to be protected, you need a system wide tunnel.
A Valideo key creates the system wide kind, through a free client.
A minimum worth insisting on
- You can find out who runs the service.
- The logging policy uses specific words: what, how long, why.
- The client software is open source or has been audited.
- You can test before paying, without handing over a card.
- Leaving is effortless: nothing renews unless you decide it should.

Q.Is a free virtual private network safe for banking?
A.The bank's own encryption protects the session. The question is what the free app does on your device, so choose a known publisher.
Q.Is there any difference between VPN and virtual private network?
A.No. One is simply the abbreviation of the other.
Q.Can a virtual private network for free be unlimited?
A.Not honestly. Unlimited and free together mean the cost is recovered from you in another way.
Q.Do I need to install anything from Valideo?
A.No. The key works in free open source clients that we do not make.
Q.Is the trial capped?
A.No data cap and no speed limit. Five days is the only limit.
Q.What if I like it?
A.Choose a term in the bot. If you do not, do nothing and it ends.
