Free online VPNs: what really exists

People search for a VPN that works in a tab with nothing to install. Here is what that turns out to be.

Short answer

Are there free VPNs? Yes. Are there any free VPNs that run entirely online, in a browser tab, with nothing installed? Not really. What gets called free online VPNs is one of three things: a web proxy page, a browser extension, or an ordinary free VPN app with the word online in its name. A real VPN has to work at the level of the operating system, and a web page cannot do that.

Knowing which of the three you have found tells you what it can and cannot protect.

The three things behind the label

  • A web proxy: a site with an address box. It fetches one page for you. There is no encryption beyond the proxy's own HTTPS, and the proxy reads everything.
  • A browser extension: it covers that browser only and needs permission to read your pages.
  • A free app: a real tunnel with caps on data, speed and locations.
  • Anything that promises full protection in a tab with nothing installed is a proxy.

When a tab is enough

If you want to read one blocked article on a library computer where you cannot install anything, a web proxy does the job. Do not log in to anything through it. For free VPNs online in the sense of a quick, throwaway tool, that is the honest use case. Beyond that single page, the limits show up fast. Video fails, logins break, and the next blocklist update takes the proxy away. Extensions last longer, but they only ever cover the browser, so a messenger or a game on the same laptop stays exactly where it was. If what you wanted was protection on public Wi-Fi, a tab based tool leaves most of your traffic outside.

Is there any free VPNs option with no catch at all?

No, and the reason is simple arithmetic. Servers and bandwidth are billed monthly. A service with no price must be paid for by adverts, by your data, by an upgrade offer or by limits tight enough to cost almost nothing. The least bad of these is the visible limit. The worst is the invisible one, where an app resells your bandwidth or your browsing habits.

A short trial of a paid service sits outside that list. It costs the provider a little, on purpose, to show you the product.

Quick safety rules

  • Never type a password into a web proxy.
  • Check who publishes an extension before you add it.
  • Treat unlimited and free together as a warning.
  • Prefer services that also sell a paid plan.
  • When you are done, remove what you installed.

The install that takes a minute

1

Open @valideo_bot in Telegram and ask for five free days.

2

Install one free client. Hiddify works on every platform.

3

Paste the vless:// line or scan the QR code.

4

Connect. Every app on the device is now inside the tunnel, which no browser tab can offer.

Q.Are there free VPNs that need no installation?

A.Only web proxies, which are not VPNs. They cover one tab, and the operator can read it.

Q.Are there any free VPNs that are unlimited?

A.Not honest ones. Unlimited and free together mean you pay in another way.

Q.Is a browser extension a VPN?

A.Usually it is a proxy for that browser. Other apps are not covered.

Q.What is the safest free option?

A.A capped tier from a known company, or a short no-card trial of a paid service.

Q.Does the Valideo trial need a card or an email?

A.Neither. A Telegram chat is all it takes.

Q.Can I use it on a computer where I cannot install software?

A.No. A system wide tunnel needs a client. On a locked computer a web proxy is the only option, with all its limits.
